Bioscience
The 21st century has been called the Age of Biotechnology and the biosciences are the underpinning technologies that will enable this to become a reality.
Biotechnology will drive expansion of the global economy, increasing wealth while reducing our environmental footprint. A bio-based economy encapsulates the vision of a future society no longer wholly dependent on fossil fuels for energy and industrial raw materials.
The UK is experiencing a rising, ageing and increasingly overweight population which will generate a number of challenges for future governments. In turn, this will create a number of opportunities for UK companies including those that can exploit plant and animal sciences to generate functional foods.
The Technology Strategy Board believes that the biosciences can support the link between health benefits and ingredients which should validate the manufacture of novel, value-added food and beverages.
Our aim is to support those biosciences which underpin industrial biotechnology such as biocatalysis, system modelling, sustainable processes for production of food, chemicals, materials, and energy production.
