Retrofit for the future specification for monitoring equipment

A briefing workshop was held on 1st and 3rd September 2009 for all Retrofit for the Future Phase 1 contract holders. During the workshop the requirements for Phase 1 design study, the process for applying into Phase 2, and the process for building performance evaluation were described in a series of presentations. There was a Q&A session after each presentation and a panel session at the end of the workshop.

Not everybody was able to attend on these days, so we are making the key information from the workshop available here.

For each presentation there are downloadable files that allow you to:

  • View the slides and listen to the speaker
  • Listen to the Q&A session
  • Download a hard copy of the slides

You can also listen to the panel discussion.

These sessions were recorded at the second workshop on 3rd September.

Retrofit for the Future - Introduction to Phase 1 and Phase 2

An introduction from Neil Morgan programme manager for Retrofit for the Future. This covers the goals of the programme, reporting requirements for Phase 1, the application process for Phase 2, and key dates.

The Energy and CO2 Targets

David Olivier explains the origin and reasons for the energy and CO2 targets, and the key requirements for Phase 2 proposals. These are: the projected average cost of a project in £/tonne CO2 saved, CO2 and primary energy savings, and the cost of the most expensive measure in £/tonne. The presentation also shows example calculations for and urban semi and a rural bungalow.

Modelling Methods

Peter Warm explains the need for whole house monitoring, how to extend SAP to the whole house, and the use of PHPP to calculate savings. He describes a worked example based on a previous retrofit project, and also the best way to analyse the cost-effectiveness of different solution packages.

Building Performance Evaluation

James Russill of the Energy Savings Trust describes how they are working with the technology Strategy Board to evaluate the performance of the Phase 2 projects. He explains what the applicants will have to do, and what the EST will do for them.

What Next and Phase 2 Application

Neil Morgan wraps up the presentations by reviewing the process for Phase 2 application. This covers the information that has to be supplied, the method for uploading information, key dates, and a discussion of what will make a good Phase 2 application.
