The MoD is looking for innovative ways of significantly reducing the loads carried by our soldiers. This is part of the 'Reducing the Burden on the Dismounted Soldier Capability Vision (CV)' (see the Defence Technology Plan on www.science.mod.uk for more details on the wider CV programme).
A potential option to reduce the burden is the use of novel technologies and materials that reduce the weight of the small arms (weapons) and ammunition carried by an Infantry Section (8 soldiers). We will award a number of contracts to demonstrate the proof of principle (PoP) of innovative technologies and innovative applications of technology that could significantly reduce system weight and improve the firepower and overall effectiveness of the Section. The total budget for Lightweight Soldier Weapon System PoP contracts is £200k. Following the seminar on 23 April, proposals for these short, focused demonstrations need to be submitted to CDE by 4th June 2009. Winning proposals will get a contract award within a few weeks leading to demonstration of their proof of principle within 3-4 months after contract award.
This competition is run by the Centre of Defence Enterprise(CDE). The CDE is the first point of contact for anyone with a disruptive technology, new process or innovation that has a potential defence application. The centre acts as a gateway between the outside world and the Ministry of Defence, bringing together innovation and investment for the defence market, ensuring that front-line forces have the best battle-winning technologies for the future.
